What’s Memorial Day Anyhow?

As we wake to preparations for cookouts and family time or lounging around on what may be just an extra day off work to us, we should know for many this day represents a cost; a sacrifice made for the betterment of mankind, not just in this country, but around the world where we have stood with other nations to defend those that don’t know the privilege we so often take for granted. Memorial Day is a symbol of the comforts of freedom so many of us enjoy in this country. It’s an opportunity to celebrate, and yet for many, never actually having to think about why we’re celebrating. As a society we are blessed and so often give out of an abundance or from what we really don’t want or need. It’s a kind of giving that knows nothing of the total sacrifice of those who willingly give their life for people they don’t know and for those not yet born. Memorial Day is a day to thank God that we were born in a country that not only was defended by great men and women in the past, but continues to exist under the protection of those who offer up their lives everyday so we can focus on other work God has called us to. It’s a time to celebrate the gift of their life that paved the road to us celebrating today. Many blessings to each of you on this beautiful holiday!
