When God Speaks Through a Dream
Years ago I dreamt I was in a pool swimming under water. The dream was so vivid, I can still remember the pale legs around me and the crystalline blue water. As I was swimming I began to run out of air and no matter how hard I tried to swim to the surface, I couldn’t make it. As I neared the end of my breath, ready to collapse, I broke through the surface and sat straight up in bed. It was the only time I’ve ever woken from a dream like that, and after decades I still remember it. Even then I knew it was significant, but only in recent years has its meaning become known to me, and I realize it was God speaking to me about a spiritual awakening that was on the horizon.
Much of the Bible relates stories of people given prophecies and directions through visions and dreams. If we believe in God, we believe in a supernatural world, how hard then is it to believe a supernatural God would want to speak personally into our lives through dreams. It doesn’t make us extra special if He does, but it always lets us know He is interested in us as individuals, and He does care.
If you have any extra vivid dreams, it’s a good idea to write them down, not that God can’t speak into ordinary dreams, but the more memorable the dream, the more likely it is God trying to speak something into your life. Even if you don’t understand its meaning at the time, it may be revealed or understood later.
A knowledge of Biblical dream symbols may be helpful for interpretation, as well as asking God directly for its meaning. He may not give it up immediately, but if you search diligently, it is in His nature to respond.
